These activities, which can be used in your homeschool preschool or your early childhood classroom, are designed to help your little ones build beginning literacy & math skills that will prepare them for success in kindergarten and beyond!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All activities come in both full color and black/white options. I’ve also included directions for 3 levels of learners: Voyagers, Explorers, and Inventors. That way, you can find the best way to use these activities depending on your little one’s level.
8 LITERACY ACTIVITIES:
1. Zoo Vocabulary Words: Includes 15 animal-themed word cards. Each word comes in 2 fonts: traceable font and solid font. Also includes 3 activity pages for students to write these words if you choose to do a “Write the Room” activity with them and 1 page of pictures for them to “Color the Room.”
2. Zoo Rhymes: Which friend is going to make it to the zoo first? Roll the cube and come up with rhyming words for each friend’s name. Then cover up the correct box on the graph to determine who will get to the zoo first!
3. Zookeeper’s Message: The zookeeper needs your little one’s help! Have them decode the picture cards using the alphabet key so they know which animal to take care of. Such a fun literacy activity that will lead right into imaginary play!
4. Zoo Animal Friends: Your little one will practice tracing and writing different types of lines with this activity.
5. Zoo Animal Syllables: Oh no, the animals have escaped from the zoo! Help them get back to their correct cages by sorting them by the number of syllables in their name. Includes 13 animal cards to sort.
6. Letters vs. Words Sort: One of the first layers of literacy we want our little ones to understand is the difference between letters & words. This activity will give them a chance to sort cards onto the correct side. There are 15 letter cards that include the uppercase & lowercase versions: Zz, Bb, Ff, Gg, Hh, Ii, Ss, Tt, Vv, Aa, Kk, Ll, Ss, Ee, & Rr (and the animal on each card begins with that letter, too, so you can also talk about beginning sounds). There are also 15 word cards that are all CVC words (consonant-vowel-consonant), so preschoolers who are ready to start blending sounds can sound out these words.
7. Carnivore vs. Herbivore Animal Sort: This activity helps preschoolers deepen their scientific knowledge by learning which animals are carnivores and which are herbivores.
8. Where’s the /z/?: This phonemic awareness activity will help your little one listen for the /z/ sound in words and determine if they hear it at the beginning or the end of the word. There is also an advanced version that asks your preschooler to come up with their own words that either start or end with /z/. Activities like this are key to developing strong readers!
8 MATH ACTIVITIES:
1. Giraffe Ten Frame: Your little one will match the number and ten frame card together, and then they’ll show the number on the blank ten frame using the giraffe cards. Includes numbers 0-10.
2. Move Like a Zoo Animal: Get your little one up and moving with this gross motor + math activity! Your little one will roll a die, identify the number and match it to the hands, move like that animal, and make a tally mark in the box.
3. African Animals Slider: Your little one will move the slider to reveal one number, and then add that number of African animals to their mat. Includes 4 different number strips: 1-10, 11-20, addition, and subtraction.
4. Kangaroo Jumps: Here’s another activity to get your little one up & moving…by jumping like a kangaroo! They’ll choose a card, place the kangaroo on the number line, and jump it forward a certain number of spots. Then your preschooler can jump that many times, too! Includes 2 versions: 0-10 and 10-20. Each version has 14 kangaroo cards.
5. Wild About 2D Shapes: Your little one will choose a card, identify the shape, and paint the circles in the shape with q-tips and paint. Reviews circle, crescent, hexagon, heart, octagon, trapezoid, oval, triangle, pentagon, rectangle, square, & star.
6. Fill the Zoo: Your little one will roll the die and add the animals to their very own zoo! Great to practice subitizing and one-to-one correspondence.
7. Which Animal is Heavier?: Your little one will choose 2 animal cards and determine which animal is heavier. Great for practicing comparison skills.
8. Zoo Animal Color by Code: Your little one will color the picture of the zoo animal based on the key. There are 4 different versions: Numbers, Stars, Addition, & Subtraction.
4 HANDS-ON ACTIVITY IDEAS (no printables, just directions):
1. Zoo Animal Sensory Bin: Easy sensory bin made with colorful rice and zoo animals.
2. Lion Mask: The most adorable craft for your lion-loving preschooler!
3. Zoo Animal Play Dough: Use play dough and cookie cutters to make zoo animals. Includes a recipe for the BEST homemade play dough!
