These activities, which can be used in your homeschool preschool or your early childhood classroom, are designed to help your little ones build beginning literacy & math skills that will prepare them for success in kindergarten and beyond!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
All activities come in both full color and black/white options. I’ve also included directions for 3 levels of learners: Voyagers, Explorers, and Inventors. That way, you can find the best way to use these activities depending on your little one’s level.
8 LITERACY ACTIVITIES:
1. Way Out West Vocabulary Words: Includes 15 western word cards. Each word comes in 2 fonts: traceable font and solid font. Also includes 3 activity pages for students to write these words if you choose to do a “Write the Room” activity with them and 1 page of pictures for them to “Color the Room.”
2. Cowboy and Cowgirl Soup: You can use this activity in SO many ways depending on your little one’s level. You can practice letter names, letter sounds, CVC words, word families, alphabetical order, and more! Includes both uppercase and lowercase printable letters in case you don’t have your own.
3. Sheriff CVC Words: Your little one will create their own CVC words by spinning the spinners & building the word (or writing the word) in the box. Then they can practice saying each sound and blending the sounds together to read the word.
4. Catch that Crook! Cutting: Have your little one help the sheriff catch the crook by cutting on the line. This activity includes two pages: one page has straight lines and one page has curvy lines. Great for fine motor development!
5. Pack the Wagon Word Families: Your little one will work on word families and rhyming words by packing the wagons with the rhyming pictures. Includes word families –ag, -et, -ip, -ob, -ud. Each word family has four picture cards that belong in that wagon.
6. Western Compound Words: The cowgirl and cowboy each need a hat and a sheriff’s badge. Your little one choose the hat and badge with pictures that create a compound word, such as “rainbow,” and place them on the mat. Includes 12 compound words.
7. Wanted: Beginning Sounds: Your little one will work on beginning sounds by identifying each picture on the Wanted poster and finding the matching beginning letter. They can also work on alliteration by giving each character a name, such as Allison Apple or Ellie Elephant. Includes all 26 letters. Note: Letter X is the ending sound in fox.
8. Way Out West Syllables: Your little one will use a clothespin to mark the correct answer. Includes one syllable card for each vocabulary word (15 total).
8 MATH ACTIVITIES:
1. Boot Number Match Up: Your little one will match each pair of boots by finding the correct number and number of dots. Includes numbers 0-10.
2. Cactus Flowers: Your little one will work on one-to-one correspondence by choosing a flower number and adding the correct number of pom poms to the cactus mat. Includes numbers 0-20.
3. Cactus Color By Code: Have your little one color the picture by the code. Reviews numbers 1-5. Includes 5 different ways to count: numbers, dice, hands, tally marks, & number words. Each way to count is a different picture of a cactus.
4. Yee-Haw Shapes: Practice 2D shapes in a fun way with this game! Your little one will match the correct shape lasso to the shape horse. Includes circle, diamond, heart, triangle, crescent, oval, square, pentagon, rectangle, star, trapezoid, parallelogram, and hexagon.
5. Wanted Ten Frame Puzzles: Your little one will practice subitizing by matching the number to the correct ten frame. Includes numbers 0-10. You can also use this to practice one-to-one correspondence.
6. Lasso Roll & Cover: Work on subitizing, graphing, and counting with this game! Your little one will roll a cube and cover the correct circle on the mat. Keep playing until one column wins!
7. Horse Jumps: Introduce addition and subtraction with a number line with this game. Your little one will choose a card and place their cowboy or cowgirl on the number line. Then they will “jump” a certain number forward or backward.
8. Desert Number Punch Cards: These punch cards are great to develop fine motor skills as well as number identification. You can also use them to introduce the concept of even & odd. Includes numbers 1-12.
4 HANDS-ON ACTIVITY IDEAS (no printables, just directions):
1. Pool Noodle Horse: You can’t do a western unit with your own horse! This pool noodle horse is an inexpensive way to bring a horse into your home!
2. Bean Bag Boot Toss: A gross motor game that will get your preschooler up and moving!
3. Pin the Badge on the Sheriff: A twist on the classic “Pin the Tail on the Donkey” game. This activity includes printable sheriff badges, but you’ll need to draw your own sheriff.
