Let’s talk about teaching our little ones at home! As a parent, it can feel scary to jump into this role, but I promise you…you can do it!
You don’t have to be a homeschooling parent to teach your little one at home. And it doesn’t have to take a lot of time, either.
You can set up simple, fun, & engaging learning activities for them to reinforce their basic academic skills all through play!
Doing this before they head off to kindergarten is going to set them up for success in school (and beyond!)
Let’s review some myths you might have heard about working with your little one at home. Hopefully you’ll feel better after you read these answers!
Myth #1: I have to homeschool to work with my child at home.
Actually, you don’t have to be a homeschooling parent to help your little one at home. You can set up enrichment activities to help them reinforce their skills without being their “teacher.”
Every parent and caregiver can help their kiddos with academic skills so they’re ready for kindergarten, even if they go to a traditional preschool or pre-k program (and especially in the summer! You want to avoid the dreaded summer slide.)
Myth #2: I need a degree in education to figure this out!
I promise you, you don’t! Setting up activities for your little ones can be super simple. Check out this post for 8 weeks worth of free at-home activities to get you started. These activities use things you probably already have around your house…I just show you how to turn them into learning games!
Myth #3: I can’t afford to work with my child at home. Materials are expensive!
Working at home with your little one does not have to be expensive. Sure, you could spent lots of money on the cutest stuff you see on Pinterest or buy everything from the Target dollar spot, but that’s totally not necessary.
Head to our FREE Activity Library first to check out all of the resources we have for you to work with your kiddos. That’s a great place to start!
Myth #4: It takes too much time to work with my child at home. We’re SO busy as it is!
I know you’re busy…I have 2 little ones at home, and our days are a whirlwind, too! But these activities don’t need to take up a lot of time. And they’re definitely worth it!
Myth #5: It won’t matter if I don’t work with my child at home. Everyone learns to read eventually.
I’ve saved this myth for last because it really hurts when I hear it.
It definitely matters if you work with your little one at home!
Parental involvement in education has been shown in many studies to have positive long-term effects on our kids. And I’ve seen this first-hand in my time as a classroom teacher.
The time you spend working with your little one matters!
