DRAGONS LOVE TACOS ACTIVITIES
If your kids are anything like mine, they LOVE silly books…in fact, the sillier, the better! That’s why my kids love Dragons Love Tacos by Adam Rubin. Have you read it before?
This book is about…you guessed it, dragons loving tacos! It’s written in a way where the author is talking directly to the reader, which is really fun. He says things like, “Hey, kid, did you know…” and then explains how much dragons love tacos. But he also explains how much dragons hate spicy salsa.
So when the boy in the story throws a party for dragons, he makes sure to include lots of tacos and buries the spicy salsa in the backyard. But what happens when the dragons eat the spicy salsa by accident?!
This book is great because it’s light-hearted, funny, and has a good message at the end…we all make mistakes, but it’s important to fix our mistakes!

LITERACY: DRAGONS LOVE READING
Setting a strong reading foundation is one of the BEST things you can do for your preschooler, and doing it through play is even better!
This game is the perfect way to engage your little learner. They will roll a dice and read a CVC word, but they will also work on phonemic awareness. After spinning the spinner (we like this one), they will isolate the sounds in a word, change the sounds in a word, and more!
MATH: TACO COUNTING
Being able to subitize is an important math kindergarten readiness skill. Subitizing is when your little one can say the amount in a group without counting each individual item. So for example, when they see a dice with 3 dots, they don’t have to count “1, 2, 3,” they can look at the dice and say “3” right away. This activity is a fun way to practice subitizing!
Your little one will choose a taco, name the dots on the dice, and feed it to the correct dragon. If they have to count each dot, no worries! Counting is a great skill, too. But we want to work with them to be able to subitize numbers 1-6 if possible.
If this is too easy for your learner, you can also begin introducing addition and subtraction! Have them solve the addition or subtraction problem and then feed the taco to the correct dragon. Yum!!
FINE MOTOR: FOOD PUNCH CARDS
Why do kids love hole punchers so much?! There’s something so satisfying for them about punching holes in paper, and they don’t even realize how amazing it is for their fine motor development!
This activity asks your little one to hole punch all the foods that dragons DON’T love…which means they’ll be hole punching almost every food item except the taco!
GROSS MOTOR: TACO CHEER
Let’s get your little one up and moving, TACO style!
Have your little one spell out TACO with their body, and then have them create a TACO cheer for the dragons! They’ll have a blast with this, and if you have them wear a taco hat, even better!
CRAFT: TACO CRAFT
After you make a cheer for tacos, it’s time to make one for yourself! This Taco Craft is super simple, but it turns out adorable! We used a clothespin and cotton ball for the painting to sneak in some extra fine motor development, too!
The final product turns out super cute, and it’s the perfect accessory to hold while reading this book!
SNACK: DESSERT TACOS
We love having tacos for dinner, but have you ever tried dessert tacos for dessert?! They’re amazing! We made homemade taco shells by baking tortillas, and then we filled them with delicious goodness! (*Recipe is included in my Dragons Love Tacos pack!)

READING RESPONSE: JOURNAL WRITING & BOOKMARK
To wrap up this unit, you can have your little one write and draw about their favorite part of Dragons Love Tacos. I’ve also included a bookmark that your little one can keep forever to remember this story and the main message: It’s okay to make mistakes!
